乳幼児の退行期の存在に関してはこれまでにたくさんの研究が成されてきています。退行期が起こる特定の時期の存在（と赤ちゃんの精神的な発達との関係）についての研究もまた然りです。この記事では存在を確認できた全ての論文と、それが査読（＝専門家による論文査定後に）出版された雑誌・書籍を簡単に紹介します。また詳しく調べたい方のために、他の特筆すべき 68 本の論文も最後に記載しています。
（一般に「メンタルリープ」と呼ばれている類の）退行期の現象を観測して発表した最初の生物学者は、Institute of Micro-ontogenetic Ethology and Macro-cosmological EcologyのRobert Horwich博士です（1974年、米ミルズ郡）。Horwich博士はさまざまな霊長類に退行期が存在し、同様の行動がもっと小さな数種類の哺乳類でも観察されたことを発表しています。また1989年の論文の中では、Horwich博士が4人の人間の赤ちゃんに退行期を観測したことも発表しています。この2つの論文は、査読誌「Primates」で出版されました。
